Technology in the Laboratory
Throughout a semester in a Biology Rocks! classroom students will explore and implement many exciting new technologies.  The lab investigations will introduce the students to computers in a lab context as they use them to run different kinds of probes, including carbon dioxide sensors and temperature probes.  In addition to probe ware students will use computer software to create models and graphs of natural processes, use modeling software to explore otherwise inaccessible phenomena, and collaborate with their classmates in solving problems using a discussion forum and collaborative documents.  Students will also generate PowerPoint presentations, scientific posters, and lab reports.

Technology in the Classroom
In addition to having a technology-rich lab experience, the classroom also makes use of the latest equipment.  The materials are designed for use with a classroom set of computers (or netbooks), an interactive whiteboard with projector, a classroom website, and a clicker response system.  All the equipment is designed to not only give the students a more contemporary learning environment, but also to make the instructor’s life easier.  Homework can be turned in digitally, so there are fewer stacks of papers.  Mini-assessments are graded automatically, so students get instant feedback while lightening the load for the instructor.  The technologies are used with purpose and add to the overall experience for everyone involved.
